Protests Against External Influence

Protesters passionately voiced their grievances, citing the country’s abundant natural resources, including uranium, diamonds, gold, and oil, and questioning why they should live in subjugation. The demonstrations clearly showcased their opposition to France’s perceived influence over Niger’s affairs.

ECOWAS’s Ultimatum

ECOWAS issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to Niger Republic’s military, demanding the restoration of ousted President Muhammed Bazoum to office. During this period, all border crossings between Niger and ECOWAS member states will remain closed.

International media, including Aljazeera, reported on the unfolding events, which further intensified the tensions.

EU’s Response: Suspension of Cooperation

In response to the coup, the European Union (EU) suspended security cooperation and budget support. The EU had allocated 503 million euros ($554 million) for Niger’s development from 2021-2024. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell emphasized President Bazoum’s legitimacy, urging his release and holding coup leaders accountable for his safety and that of his family.

African Union’s Stand

The African Union condemned the coup, demanding the military restore constitutional authority within 15 days. The situation gained widespread attention, with many countries expressing support for the ousted President and democratic norms restoration in Niger.

International Watch and Support
